Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood join Travelers Championship field

The Travelers Championship added two more prominent golfers on Monday morning, including another top-10 player.

Viktor Hovland, ranked eighth in the world rankings released on Monday, turned professional at the 2019 Travelers Championship after being given a sponsor’s exemption by the tournament when he was the No. 1 ranked amateur at the time. He won the 2018 US Amateur and has won there times on the PGA Tour,

“We saw Viktor’s potential and gave him a sponsor exemption in 2019 when he was one of the best amateurs ready to start his professional career, and he’s already proven himself as one of the best players in the world,” said Andy Bessette, the executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers


In addition, Tommy Fleetwood is returning to play the tournament for the second time. Fleetwood, who is tied for 13th in 2019, has two runner-up finishes in major championships (2018 US Open and 2019 British Open) as well as a pair of top-10 finishes at the Players Championship.

Fleetwood is ranked 40th in the world. This is Hovland’s third appearance at Travelers, his best a tie for 11th in 2020.

The other top-ranked golfers previously committing are as follows: No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 1 3 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 4 Patrick Cantlay, No. 4 5 Justin Thomas and No. 9 Sam Burns.

Tickets are on sale at www.travelerschampionship.com. The tournament will be held June 23-26. Entry into the field closes on Friday.
