4L Javi – “Love Letter”
4L Javi toes the line between rapper and R&B singer. He’s part of a wave of LA artists (including Kalan.frfr, Blxst, and MCM Raymond) who bring the parts of both genres into the mix. The lovelorn production of the instrumentals Javi harmonizes over is equally indebted to West Coast rap and the mood of PARTYNEXTDOOR. “Love Letter,” the intro to his latest album Letters 2 U, is two minutes of Javi trying to win an old girlfriend back in the least convincing way possible. He admits to being the bad guy, wants a pat on the back for not sleeping around as much as he used to, and to top it all off, he tells her that her life is just way better with him. His complete lack of effort is compelling in his own right—he doesn’t even feel like trying to pretend to be romantic. It’s a love song written by someone who knows he’s in the wrong.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
